– To say Nigerian politicians are over-ambitious is stating the obvious
– But sometimes, the desperate ones do not have the last laugh
– Acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s journey to Aso Rock was smooth and without stress
A report by The Cable has detailed how Acting President Yemi Osinbajo emerged as Nigeria’s vice president without lobbying for it.
Minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and his solid minerals counterpart, Kayode Fayemi were said to have lobbied for the position of vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before the 2015 presidential elections.
President Buhari ignored their advances and instead settled for Osinbajo, whose name was put forward by the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Osinbajo once described his emergence as vice-president as divine, because he did not have to scheme to get the job.
According to the report, Amaechi had thrown in a challenge for the office. Amaechi’s argument was that a vice-presidential candidate from the south-south would temper the brewing restiveness in the region.
Osinbajo has not publicly acknowledged Tinubu’s role in his emergence as the vice president, but he has given hint subtly about Tinubu’s help.
At a presidential dinner in honour of the beneficiaries of the amnesty programme in Abuja in October 2016, Osinbajo, for the first time, spoke subtly on the matter.
His words: “I was in a group of young men and women and one of them asked the question how did I become vice president; I was never a politician or anything like that.
“So, I tried to explain it is quite simply that someone somewhere has to recommend you. Somebody somewhere has to give you a helping hand.”
He also overcame a challenge for the position from other south-westerners such as former governors Kayode Fayemi, Niyi Adebayo and Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
Meanwhile, former presidential aide, Pastor Reno Omokri has showered praises on Osinbajo’s recent performances as Nigeria’s acting leader.
In a tweet on Tuesday, March 7, Omokri stated that Osinbajo has outshined his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently on medical vacation in the United Kingdom.
